WALTER J. ASCHE, 83 DURAND - Walter J. Asche, 83, Durand, died at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, in Medina Manor Nursing Center, Durand. Born April 26, 1923, in Seward, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Weert and Mary (Kaltenbach) Asche. Moved in 1990, to the Durand area coming from Ridott, where he had lived for 21 years. Married Georgianna Ruth Kroll on Jan. 7, 1953, in Rockford. She died Jan. 30, 1996. He was employed as a construction worker for Beloit Pipeline and farmed, retiring in 1990. Veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater. Member of Durand American Legion Gold Post #676 and Pecatonica American Legion Eugene J. Barloga Post #197. Attended Leaf River and Seward schools. Survivors include sister, Bertha White, of Mount Morris; brothers, Melvin (Rose) Asche of Leaf River and Wayne (Joan) Asche of Winnebago; several nieces and nephews; friends and caretakers, Joanne Charlton of Durand and Jack Walsh of Lake Summerset. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Irene Munk and Velma Wagner; and brothers, Raymond and LaVern Asche. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Hospice Care of America, the staff at Medina Nursing Center and Dr. Donovan and his staff for their compassionate care given to Walter. Funeral will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 22, in McCorkle Funeral Home, 101 Main St., Durand, with Deacon Dick Mulcahey, St. Mary Catholic Church, Durand, officiating. Burial in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Durand. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to time of service Friday. A memorial is being established.
