Phyllis Hale Tate, 88, of Blacksburg, passed away on June 22, 2013, after a brief illness. The daughter of the late Ruth Wilson and Philip Dow Hale Sr., she was born in Blacksburg, Va. on February 3, 1925.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dewitt Tate Jr., her brothers Philip Dow Hale Jr., Edward Wilson Hale, and Philip Lewis Hale, and her sisters, Ann Hale Williams and Ruth Hale Parker.


She is survived by her children, Patricia Tate McMichael, Norfolk, Ruth Tate Simpson (Thomas Edward Simpson), Richmond, and Dr. Robert Hale Tate, Lakeland, Fla.; her grandchildren, Robert Dewey McMichael IV, Virginia Beach, Katherine Whitney Simpson, Richmond, and Sgt. David Parker Simpson, Richmond; and ten nieces and nephews.


A life-long resident of Blacksburg, she was retired from the Sports Information Office at Virginia Tech and was an active and devoted member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church.


A visitation with family and friends will be held at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, on Sunday, June 23, 2013 from 4p.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 24, 2013, at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 Church Street, with the Rev. Reggie Tuck officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery.


Memorial gifts may be made to the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 Church Street, Blacksburg, VA, or the Robert H. Tate Faculty Development Fund, Florida Southern College, 111 Lake Hollingsworth Drive, Lakeland, FL.
