Ernest Francis Goralka, 85, of Tarentum, departed this life and went to be with the Lord Friday, June 21, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, at Forbes Hospice at Allegheny Valley Hospital, Natrona Heights, after a lingering illness. He was born May 28, 1928, in Tarentum, a son of the late George L. and Julia (Bros) Goralka, and was a lifelong resident of Tarentum. Ernie was a 1947 graduate of Tarentum High School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a corporal in the 25th Reconnaissance Company, 25th Infantry Division. He was wounded in action at Satae-ri, North Korea, March 2, 1952, alongside his twin brother, Anthony. He received the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, United Nations Korea Service Medal, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Combat Infantry Badge. Ernie worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier out of the Tarentum post office, retiring in 1987, after 40 years of service. Prior to that, he worked briefly at the former Tarentum Paper Mill and in the chemistry lab at Allegheny Ludlum Steel, Brackenridge. He was a member of Holy Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, Tarentum, where he served as an usher, altar server, and was a former member of the parish council. He also enjoyed volunteering at various parish activities. He was a member of the former St. Peter Church of Tarentum and its St. Vincent de Paul and Holy Name societies, as well as the Men's Choir, which was well-known throughout the Valley for their beautiful Latin High Masses. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, a 60 year member of American Legion Post 226 of Brackenridge, and a member of First Catholic Slovak Union (Jednota) Branch No. 831, of Tarentum. He previously was a member of the New Kensington Elks Men's Chorus and previously served as minority clerk on the Board of Elections for the Third War of Tarentum. Ernie was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates, as well as Pitt and Notre Dame football. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, trips to the casinos, doing word search puzzles, and watching game shows on TV, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Ernie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathryn "Kay" (Skok) Goralka, who he married June 7, 1958; a son, James Goralka, of Tarentum; daughter, Kathy Schreiber and her husband, Joseph, of Allegheny Township; his twin brother, Anthony Goralka, of Tarentum; and his two granddaughters, Krista and Kelly Schreiber. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, the Rev. George J. Goralka, the Rev. Albert A. Goralka, Francis A. "Frank" Goralka; sister, Josephine Dusko; as well as brothers, Rudolph, John and Clement; and sister, Mary, all in childhood. Ernie will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. He loved God, his Catholic faith, his country and his family. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in DUSTER FUNERAL HOME INC., Tenth Avenue at Corbet Street, Tarentum, (724)224-1526, where a blessing service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Martyrs Church, Tarentum, with the Rev. Aaron J. Kriss officiating. Interment will be in Our Lady of Hope Cemetery, Frazer Township, with military honors accorded by Brackenridge American Legion and Tarentum VFW.
