Margaret was born to James Mead Ackerman and Margaret Etchison. She moved to New Mexico from Texas with her parents, sometime between 1900 and 1903.

In 1913, her mother died, leaving behind thirteen children ranging in age from 25 to one year. A few years later, her father left to work in India, leaving the children to raise themselves. Although he returned to the United States, he settled in California and never returned to care for his children. All the children helped raise each other, but, Margaret, being unmarried, took a leading role.

Margaret earned a teaching certificate, working as a telephone operator to pay for her education. She later went on to get her bachelor's degree in math and taught math in the local schools.

When her brother's wife died, she raised his children, as he was in the military and traveled.

Margaret was living in Anton Chico, New Mexico, when she become ill. She was taken to the hospital in Santa Fe, where she died.

She was cremated and her ashes interred in a niche in the garden at the Church of the Holy Faith in Santa Fe.
