He was the son of Edwin Austin (22 FEB 1785 of Virginia - he died in 1847, Antioch, Davidson County, Tn.) and his wife Millicent Thompson (5 NOV 1785 - 22 SEP 1840)

He was married to Elizabeth Leona "Betsy" Peay, d/o George & Nancy Johnston Peay.

Newton Cannon Austin fought in the Cherokee Indian War of 1838 under Capt. Hill and Col. Yokum's Tennessee Volunteers. He volunteered at Nashville the eighth day of May 1838 and was honorably discharged at Calhoun the same year.

Newton Cannon Austin was a school teacher. He was elected a Constable in 1866 of Davidson County. In later life he was a deputy Sheriff of Davidson County Tn.

Most of this detail came from page 65 of a book "History of Cane Ridge Tennessee" This book has a large portion devoted to the large Austin family of southern Davidson County, TN many of whom are buried in the Austin & Cane Ridge Cemeteries of Cane Ridge Church aka Antioch, (southern) Davidson County Tennessee.

Copied this from the Haywood County Tennessee Library during lunch break - 1988, where a copy of this book resided.
