Harold A. Hess, formerly from Intercourse, was a politician, civic leader and entrepreneur, died Friday, June 21, 2013 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was 93 and lived at Brethren Village.

A retired beef cattle and tobacco farmer, Hess was formerly secretary-treasurer of Vintage Sales Stables Inc. for 18 years.

He also served as a past president of Pennsylvania Livestock Association and was a real estate developer in the Intercourse area.

Hess served on the board of directors of First National Bank of Intercourse from 1962 to 1972. After its merger, he served on the new regional board of directors of Farmers First Bank from 1972 to 1992, for a total of 30 years, including 10 years as chairman.

Hess, a Republican, began his political career in1941 at the age of 22.

Hess was tax collector for Leacock Township for 22 years. In 1960, he was elected president of the Lancaster County Tax Collectors' Association.

From 1966 to 1970, Hess served as Lancaster County Comptroller.

He also served as a member of the Tax Assessment Board of Lancaster County from 1972 to 1980.

Hess served as Republican committeeman of Leacock Township for 25 years.

Hess also served as president of Eastern Lancaster County Republicans in the 1960s and early '70s.

He also mentored and counseled young people to get more involved in the community, government and politics. And since moving to Brethren Village, his own involvement in politics did not cease — he continued volunteering for local, state and national candidates.

Hess received the Lancaster County Republican of the Year award in 1986 and the Servant Leadership Award from the Republican Committee of Lancaster County in 2005.

He also received a Congressional Certificate of Merit from former Congressman Robert S. Walker, in recognition of his service to the community and nation.

Hess was very involved in the Intercourse community and civic organizations.

He served as president of the Intercourse Fire Company and Intercourse Civic Association.

He was a charter member and past president of the Intercourse Lions Club. He was Lion of the Year in 1995-96 and received Lions' highest award, the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, in 2000.

In 2001, Hess received the Community Service Award from the Intercourse Lioness Club.

Hess was the last surviving member of the The Intercourse Association of Lancaster County for the Recovery of Stolen Horses and Other Stolen Properties, and Detection of Thieves, more familiarly known as The Horse Thief Association.

The organization was formed by the state legislature to stop horse thieves from 1852 to 1896 — prior to the formation of the state police. Hess served as second vice-president. The organization disbanded in 1999 with Hess and only one other member who was active.

He was a member of Conestoga Church of the Brethren, where he served as recording secretary, chairman of the stewardship committee and church auditor.

In June 2004, Hess was honored as the co-grand marshal of the Intercourse 250th anniversary parade.

Hunting deer and turkey was a passion for Hess. He served as president of Mill Creek Sportsman Club, Leacock Township Sportsmans association and Pine Ridge Hunting Club. He also was a member of Friends of the National Rifle Association. Hess also enjoyed gardening and collecting antiques.

Born on Nov. 3, 1919, in Mascot, he was the oldest of five children of the late Myer and Carrie Zwally Hess.

He was the husband of Eleanor Snyder Hess, who died in 1998.

Surviving are a son, H. Lynn, married to Monica (Muessig) Hess of Reading; a daughter, Lila J., married to Leonard Neff of Intercourse; five grandchildren; a step granddaughter; two step great-grandchildren; a sister, Ellen Groff of Brethren Village; and a brother, Leon Hess of New Holland.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virgie Groff and Ethel Jean Weidler.

Funeral services will be held at Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 10 Brethren Road, Leola, on Wednesday, June 26 at 10:30 am with the Rev. Jere A. Cassel and the Rev. Del Kenney officiating. Interment in Bareville Cemetery. Family will receive friends at Groff-High Funeral Home, 145 W. Main St., New Holland on Tuesday from 7-9 pm and at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in honor of Harold to Brethren Village Benevolent Fund, PO Box 5093, Lancaster, PA 17606-5093.
