Gladys Ethel 'Kay' Sawyer Schaffer Kendall Crawford was born September 10, 1923, in Boston, MA, daughter of Irving and Doris Sawyer. She first married Nathan Schaffer, an Army Air Corps veteran; then David Kendall, an Air Force veteran and last husband, Dale Crawford an Army veteran and German POW.
Kay at age 18, enlisted in the Navy in 1941. She was trained as an x-ray technician and rose to the rank of Petty Officer Second Class in her three years of service. She married Nathan Schafer and married and had two children, Marc and Jonathan.
Surviving are sons, Marc (Cindy) Schaffer and Jonathan (Shawn-ann) Shaffer; stepdaughter, Ruth Kendall; grandchildren, Simone and Benjamin and several nieces and nephews.
