Spc. Robert E. Hall Jr., 30, of Bellevue, was killed in Iraq Tuesday when a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb near his position.
Mr. Hall was guarding the entrance to the base of his unit, the 467th Engineer Battalion in Ad Dujayl, near Balad, in northern Iraq. Another soldier was injured in the blast.
A 1993 graduate of North Hills High School, Mr. Hall worked as a driver for Waste Management Inc. in Ambridge in civilian life.
Mr. Hall was a member of the Individual Ready Reserve, and was involuntarily recalled to active duty last year to fill a vacancy in a Mississippi unit.
"He was a real nice friendly guy. He got along with everybody," said Staff Sgt. Lester Jones, who served with Mr. Hall in Iraq.
Mr. Hall played soccer in high school and loved video games, said his sister, Tara Seamon, of Weirton, W.Va. She described her brother as "a very quiet guy," a serious man who kept to himself and hardly ever smiled. But he was extremely devoted to his 3-year-old daughter, Rachael, and loved to spend time with her.
"He'd do anything for his daughter," she said.
Mr. Hall knew there was a possibility he might be recalled for duty, Seamon said, "and when he got the papers, he took it like a man." He left right after Christmas.
According to Seamon, her brother had joined the Army Reserve in 1997 and served for three years, getting out in 2000. Next month would mark the end of five years inactive, she said, at which point, "they wouldn't have been able to call him back up."
Mr. Hall was only 3 when their father died, Seamon said, the same age his daughter is now. "So now my mother is reliving everything again, too."
David Steiner, chief executive officer of Waste Management Inc., has ordered that flags at the company's facilities in the United States and Canada be lowered to half staff for two days, beginning on July Fourth, in Mr. Hall's honor.
"The people who worked with Robert were saddened by the news of his death, but proud of his service to our country and his sacrifice," said Jim Gebicki, Western Pennsylvania spokesman for Waste Management Inc.
Mr. Hall also is survived by his wife, Tracie; his mother, Midge Beachem, and his stepfather, James Beachem, of Ross, and sister Lori Unver of Istanbul, Turkey.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been determined, Seamon said.
