Some sources suggest John was born in Derby, Vermont. His Vermont Death Certificate states he was born in Georgia, Vermont on January 20, 1828.

John married Ellen Barber on March 25, 1851 in Burlington, Vermont.
John Northrop's obituary appeared in the Burlington (Vermont) Weekly Free Press, September 9 1909. It states he lived at 35 Battery Place, and that he was survived by 6 daughters and 4 sons. The obituary states he was a life-long resident of Burlington. It seems likely that he was born in Georgia Vermont, as his parents did not move to Williston until after 1830, then later moved to Burlington.
