Jesse W. Mathews, 65, a lifetime Grays Harbor resident, died Wednesday, March 13, 1996, while on vacation.
He was born April 12, 1930, in Ocosta, to Ralph and Bertha (Graham) Mathews.
He attended Ocosta High School, graduating in 1948. He served in the Army during the Korean War.
In 1954, he married Faith Cookston in Montesano. She survives in Montesano.
After the Army, he worked as a commercial fisherman. He then worked for Simpson Timber Co., for 13 years. He later for Quigg Brothers, Friend and Rikalo Inc., and several other companies on the harbor. He worked on the Alaska Pipeline and also built ice roads in Alaska.
He was a life member of the Montesano VFW; Post-Operating Engineers Local 302; and the Montesano Lodge 43 F&A.M.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and clam digging. He also liked to read Western literature.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Tyrie of Mason Lake; a daughter, Mrs. Randy "Ardell" McDougall of Hoquiam; a brother, Ralph of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Leah Lauerman of Mason Lake and Sharon Mathews of Montesano; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A sister, Beverly, died before him.
A funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, March 18, at the Fern Hill Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Wynoochee Cemetery in Montesano.
