Catherine Virginia Powell went to be with Jesus on June 16, 2013 after a tragic swimming accident at her beloved Lake Waccamaw. She was born on July 2, 2009 in Raleigh NC. Catherine, or "Kit Cat", as she was called to all who knew and loved her. She attended school at White Memorial Weekday School. She is the daughter of Ralph Sadler Powell and Leigh Thomas Powell of Raleigh. She was the granddaughter of Virginia Coburn Powell and the late Walter H. "Buck" Powell, Sr. of Whiteville, NC and David Lee Thomas and Grace Shelby Thomas of Raleigh, NC.
She is survived by her parents, two sisters and brother, Gracie Leigh Powell, Sadler Thomas Powell and Ginny Elizabeth Powell of the home and a loving family of 12 aunts and uncles and 13 cousins.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the heroic rescue personnel, doctors, nurses, police officers, and other medical care givers that worked so long and hard to save her.
On Wednesday, June 19th the family will receive family and friends from 6PM-8PM at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. On Thursday, June 20th , there will be a private service at 11 AM at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. At 2 pm, family and friends are invited to a memorial service at Hayes Barton Baptist church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the White Memorial Weekday School, 1704 Oberlin Rd., Raleigh, NC 27608, St David's School, 3400 White Oak Road, Raleigh, NC 27609, or the Lake Waccamaw Fire & Rescue Squad, 203 Flemington Drive, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450.
