March 29, 1945 - June 13, 2013
New Orleans, Louisiana

Samuel Harper Boyd, born March 29, 1945 in Georgetown, South Carolina, died suddenly at his home in New Orleans LA on June 13, 2013.

He is survived by his adoring wife, Betty Kathleen Mooney Boyd "Kathy", his loving children, Gillespie Godfrey Boyd III (Autumn) and Kathleen Haaf Boyd, and his cherished grandchildren, Alexandra Frances Boyd and Gabrielle Kathleen Boyd.

He is also survived by his dear siblings, Gillespie Godfrey Boyd Jr., William Herbert Boyd (Mary), Harriet Claire Boyd Jagger, and Isabelle Harper Boyd Tennant (Marty) all of Georgetown SC ; Geraldine Price Boyd Duff (Robert) of Merritt Island, FL, and Charles Price Boyd (Beverly) of Atlanta, GA, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Gillespie Godfrey Boyd, Sr. and Geraldine Price Boyd.

His life was enriched by his numerous close friends whom he treasured throughout all of his years.

Samuel Boyd began his long and distinguished career as an educator in the St. Bernard Parish Public Schools in 1970 as a social studies teacher at St. Bernard High School.

He quickly rose to the position of Assistant Principal in 1975 and assumed the role of principal of St. Bernard High School in 1982. He then became principal of Chalmette Middle School in 1983, a position he held until Katrina devastated the school district in 2005.

He returned to the school district in November to help rebuild schools and programs, assuming responsibility for middle school programs at the St. Bernard Parish Unified School. In July, 2006, he was appointed coordinator for the parish Adult Education program, restoring that program to one of the finest in the state in terms of graduation rates for adults and fiscal stability.

It was the position from which he was to retire in July after 43 years of exemplary service. Superintendent of Schools Doris Voitier called Mr. Boyd, "truly a distinguished educator who put the needs of students first.

He was a gifted administrator whom we knew we would miss after his retirement, but now we have an even greater void in our lives because of his death. The school district will miss this legend."

Services will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 2919 St. Charles Ave. New Orleans, LA 70115, on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M., and the service will start at 11:00 A.M.

Memorial gifts may be made to Christ Church Cathedral, New Orleans, or Prince George, Winyah Episcopal Church, 301 Screven St., Georgetown, South Carolina.
