Erma Lee Hudson

Laurel—Erma Lee Hudson, 86, of Laurel, passed away at her home on Monday, June 17, 2013.

She was born on April 4, 1927 in Chincoteague, Virginia, a daughter of the late Brattie Lee and Annie Rebecca Savage.

Erma Lee Savage grew up on Chincoteague, Virginia as the youngest daughter of a waterman. For generations, her family harvested oysters and this is where our mother developed her love for the sea, its creatures and its bountiful seafood. She also learned a lot about the value of hard work.

She married young, raised six children, laid two husbands to rest and late in life became a highly accomplished artist. Innovative and creative, the paintings she crafted on feathers are favorites to those that knew and understood her artistic passion. She is the toughest woman we have ever known. The strong work ethic and fierce sense of independence she learned at an early age shaped the rest of her life.

We have learned much from our Mother over the years but she never lost the ability to surprise. She was far more traveled, better read and accomplished in the kitchen than many knew and she had an incredible capacity for loving, especially children. She enjoyed the company of babies as much as anyone and prided herself on her ability to make a child smile or laugh from pure joy.

She is survived by her children, Nancy Detwiler of Onancock, Virginia, David Hudson (Charlie) of Louisiana, John Hudson (Fran Burnham) of Seaford, James Edward Hudson, Jr. (Sylvia) of King George, Virginia, and Tammy Hudson Lewis (Brian) of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland; grandchildren, Nancy Adams, William B. Moore, Sara Kate Newman, David F. Detwiler, III, David Scott Hudson, Jennifer Tyndall, Kyle Lewis, Tyler Lewis, Jason Lewis, Amanda Lewis, and Dylan Lewis; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Birch and Jean Birch, both of Chincoteague; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Hudson, and a daughter, Annie Rebecca Moore.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Sunset Memorial Park in Berlin.

In memory of Mrs. Hudson, contributions may be sent to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.shortfh.com.
