Son of Nehemia Spradling and Mary Brown.
Samuel Cabell, an open Confederate sympathizer, was killed on July 18, 1865, by several men: Allen Spradlin, Andrew Jackson Spradling, Mark L. Spradlin (Matthew P. Spradling?), Stark B. Whittington, Lawrence Whittington, William Whittington and Christopher Williams. These men were indicted and later acquitted of the murder of Cabell in late 1865, self-defense being the outcome of the case. Stark B. Whittington was the father of Allen B. Spradling's wife, Anna Elizabeth (Whittington) Spradling.
Samuel Cabell's story is also the story of a man's love for his former slave, and ultimately the founding of West Virginia State University at Institute,
