William bought his 1st land in Georgia on Feb. 29, 1788. This was a tract from John Ross, brother in law of Samuel Woods, and a tract from Andrew Woods on south side of Broad River in Wilkes County. In August, 1789, he bought land at the same location from Elizabeth Sailors. All this land fell into Elbert County in 1790 when Elbert was created, and in 1811 it became the "Fork District" of Madison County. These deeds read William Patton of Burke County, NC. William eventually sold hos land in Fork District to sons of Samuel Woods and acquired 581 acres on Turkey Creek at the North Oconee river in Jackson County, GA, where he spent his last years. He died in August, 1828.
William served the NC Militia during the Revolution. He was captured by the British and paroled by General Lord Cornwallis in 1781 according to Cornwallis Papers, British public records. William also received payment of 9 pounds, 15 shillings and 2 pence in October, 1781 from the state of NC for an unspecified reason.
Known children of William and Margaret are: William(1779), Samuel Young(died 1829), James, Robert, Francis(1789), Charity(1793) and Margaret(1796). There may be others.
