Henry F. Lee, 80, longtime state PSC member, dies
Montgomery, Ala., March 2 - Henry Fitzhugh Lee, a widely-known political figure in Alabama for many years, died at his home in Montgomery yesterday after a long illness. He was 80.
He was a native of Clayton in Barbour County, and came to Montgomery in 1906. He was examiner of public accounts and became chief clerk in the state auditor's office. He later served as secretary to the Board of Equalization for four years. He also served one term as state auditor from 1919 to 1922.
He was elected to the Alabama Public Service Commission in 1922 and served for five consecutive terms. He was in the midst of many of the stormy rate cases the APSC had jurisdiction over during that 16 year period. During that time, the advent of the Tennessee Valley Authority and a fight for utility rate relief in Alabama came about. In 1942, he ran for reelection again, but was defeated by former Gov. Gordon Persons.
Mr. Lee is survived by his wife, Mrs. Wyllanne Pruett Lee; a son, Fitzhugh Lee Jr., and a brother, Dr. L.T. Lee of Selma.
