G. W. (Will) MORGAN ~

It took a lot of doing, but I finally found corroberating records & links until I can now say without question who his parents were, where, when, etc.! (Everyone who would have known & could have easily shared that informaton is long-ago deceased.)
~ He is in an "Unmarked Grave" buried next to his wife, Mattie Maxey Lightfoot Morgan, who is also in an Unmarked Grave @ Evergreen Cemetery @ Paris, Lamar Co., TX. ~
They had "no children" from their marriage who could have made certain they had tombstones @ their graves. Having no tombstones made the search for their dates & for them even more difficult.

"GEORGE WILLIAM 'WILL' MORGAN" was born on 10-14-1875 in Paris, Lamar Co., TX @ his parents' residence. His parents were: Rufus B. Morgan & Mary Isabella Buster Morgan.
________________________
WILL's FATHER was "Rufus B. Morgan".
RUFUS was born on 3-8-1849 to his parents who were both born in Mississippi. One document says RUFUS was born in TX (TX death record on "G. W. Morgan") while RUFUS stated on the Census of 1880 that he was born in Arkansas. RUFUS's Parents were "not named" on the 1880 Census Report, but he gave the state of their births for both as MS. (Also, his mother-in-law who was widowed was living with RUFUS (Occupation = Farmer), his wife, son John, & son William in that 1880 Census.)

RUFUS died on 8-23-1904 @ Lamar Co., TX.
----------------------------------
RUFUS married "Mary Isabella Buster" on 2-27-1873
in Lamar Co., TX.
----------------------------------
WILL's MOTHER was "Mary Isabella Buster Morgan".

BELLA was born on 9-26-1854 in Pineville Township, McDonald Co., Missouri. BELLA's father was "Charles K. Buster" (b: 9-12-1813 in TN & d: 11-8-1872 in Lamar Co., TX). BELLA's mother was "Permelia E. Warren" (b: 1-14-1821 in TN & d: 1-19-1886 in Lamar Co., Texas). BELLA's Parents were married on 12-9-1841.

In the "1860 Census" her parents on Page Number: 22, Sheet Number: 22, are @ Pineville Township, McDonald County, Missouri; enumerated on June 8, 1860; Post Office: Pineville. But, in the "Census of 1870" they are listed on Page Number: 8, Beat No. 5, @ Lamar County, Texas; enumerated on September 20, 1870; Sheet 366, Post Office: Paris.

So, by 1870 BELLA & her parents had arrived in Paris, Lamar Co., TX from MO.

BELLA died on 7-30-1886 @ Lamar Co., TX.

G. W. "WILL" MORGAN was a very important character who affected the lives of so many people in NE TX (in Fannin & Lamar Counties) & beyond!

He inherited 200 acres @ Riverby from an uncle. He was a practicing attorney @ Honey Grove when he got this inheritance. He ended-up turning the 200 acres he inherited into 10,000 acres when he was done! Before the hybridization of cotton, the cotton could be 10 ft. tall...thus, the term, "strutting in high cotton"!

He ended-up employing thousands of people...whether the hundreds of families who share-cropped his 10,000 acres (who all seemed to have numerous children) or the freight wagon companies who transported his cotton, or the ferrymen who worked on Red River, or the cotton gin workers, or the school teachers who taught the workers' children, or the carpenters who built houses in the area, or the horse breeders, or the mule drivers, or the mechanics who worked on new-fangled farming equipment that was being developed, or the barbers @ Telephone or Monkstown, or cooks of the cafes @ Monkstown or Telephone, or the gas station operators & suppliers that were gaining popularity, or the silent picture show workers @ Monkstown, or the operators & suppliers of the mercantile companies, etc....The Morgan Farm brought sooo many to this area where they worked & played & attended church & lived & raised their families in the early 1900's!

WILL married "'Mattie' Maxey Lightfoot" in 1917. He had already moved to the Riverby area where he was farming the 10,000 acres. MATTIE was from Ravenna (which is northwest of Bonham & 34 miles from Riverby).
---------
"MATTIE Maxey Lightfoot" was born 7-4-1884 @ Ravenna, Fannin Co., TX.

MATTIE's DAD was "Thomas Lightfoot". He was born on 7-20-1834 at Pulaski, Giles Co.,TN & died on 2-12-1895 at Ravenna, Fannin Co., TX.

MATTIE's MOM was "Mary Andrews Maxey". She was born on 12-4-1845 at Monroe Co., KY & died on 8-20-1910 at Ravenna, Fannin Co., TX.

Mary's Parents (Mattie's Maternal Grandparents) were: "John Maxey (1787 VA -1851)" & "Martha Biggerstaff (1822-1862)".
-------
*** On 2-25-1966 when MATTIE died, she had these 4 Survivors listed: a surviving Sister who lived in Paris, "Mary Lightfoot", an artist; a Nephew by her older half-brother (Robert D. Lightfoot) "Lee Gano Lightfoot", his wife (Elizabeth Ferguson Lightfoot), & their son, "Robert MORGAN Lightfoot" who were all from NY, NY where Nephew Gano worked as an executive for Howard Hughes @ TWA. ***

WILL MORGAN retired & moved from Honey Grove, TX in 1955 to Paris, TX. He had lived in Fannin County, TX for 50 years. He was an attorney in Honey Grove, a large cotton plantation owner @ Riverby, a lifelong Methodist, a full-degree Mason, & a Knight Templar. He & Mattie never had children of their own; but they were generous, kind, & encouraging to many children along the way! He wrote a portion of the eulogy for his neighboring plantation owner & friend, Joe R. Goss, Sr., when he passed-away in 1947.

WILL passed away 3 years after his move to Paris on 5-19-1958 in Paris, Lamar Co., TX. He was survived by his wife MATTIE & nieces & nephews.

WILL MORGAN is remembered by many who knew & loved him & his wife Mattie (or by those who merely heard the wonderful stories about them). WILL MORGAN is remembered even now...a hundred years after he established The Morgan Farm!
