Nobel Prize Laureate Scientist. He was honored in 1982 for his development of the re-normalization group, a mathematical tool used in quantum physics to elucidate phase transition, the switching of matter from one physical state, magnetic property, or electric conductivity to another due to changes in temperature or pressure. The child of a respected Harvard chemistry professor, he studied at private schools in both England and America, received his undergraduate degree from Harvard in 1956, then in 1961 earned his doctorate at Caltech where his faculty advisor was 1969 Nobel laureate Dr. Murray Gell-Mann. Following a year at the Geneva-based CERN particle physics laboratory, he accepted a faculty appointment at Cornell University in 1963 and became a full professor there in 1970. During the 1970s, Dr. Wilson used fractals, repeating mathematical patterns, to develop the renormalization group, equations necessary for the understanding of phase transition, in the process, of necessity, becoming a pioneer in the field of super computing. The 1980 recipient of Israel's Wolf Prize, he was, unusually, awarded the 1982 Nobel Prize unshared. He moved to Ohio State University in 1988 where he founded the Physics Education Research Group; Dr. Wilson remained at Ohio State until his 2008 retirement though in 1995 he bought a home in Gray, Maine, a move that enabled him to persue his lifelong passion of mountain climbing. His honors were many including being named to the National Academy of Sciences in 1975 and election to Philadelphia's American Philosophical Society, a group headed over the years by, among others, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, in 1984. He died in a nursing facility of lymphoma.
