U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Valparaiso College Indiana, in 1886 and taught school in Dallas County, Texas. Moving to Colorado, he taught school in Gilpin County, (1887-88), was school principal in Black Hawk, (1888-89) and was superintendent of public schools at Idaho Springs, (1890-99). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar, practiced law at Idaho Springs and was Lieutenant Governor of Colorado, (1903-05). In 1907, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixtieth Congress, serving until 1909. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he practiced law, served as judge of the district court of the second judicial district of Colorado, (1921-22) and was president of the Vermillion Oil Company, (1925-44). He died in retirement at age 93.
