Architect. Born in Novoa Usolye, Russia, to a family of serfs belonging to Count Aleksandr Sergeivich Stroganov, President of the Imperial Academy of Arts. He was apprenticed in the workshop of an icon painter when his talent attracted Stroganov's attention. In 1777, the count sent him to study in Moscow. He moved to Saint Petersburg in 1779 where he studied miniature painting and architecture. He rounded out his education in France and Switzerland. In 1785, he was liberated from serfdom. In 1797, he received the title of academician from the Academy of Art for his water color 'View of a Picture Gallery in Stroganov Palace,' (1793) and his oil painting 'View of the Stroganov Dacha,' (1797). His earliest architectural work included interior finishes in the Stroganov Palace. In 1798, he completed a commission for a house on the Gorodnia Estate in Kaluga Guberniia. In 1801, he submitted designed for the Kazan Cathedral in Saint Peteresburg. For his work he was granted a pension and created a member in the order of St. Anna, an Imperial order of chivalry. He became a professor at the Academy of Art in 1802. Other architectural works include the Department of the Treasury building, the Academy of Mines in Saint Petersburg, the colonnade of the Peterhof, and several palaces. In 1803, commissioned by Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, he worked in Pavlovsk to create the Little Lantern study and the Rose Pavilion. His work in applied art, furniture, lighting fixtures, glass, stone and porcelain is regarded to be of great importance. He is remember as one of Russia's most distinguished neo-classical architects.
