Civil War Union Army Officer. He helped raise and served as Lieutenant of Colorado's first voluntary militia company A, "the Elbert Guard". He served as Captain of company B, 3rd Colorado Cavalry "the Bloodless Third", in the infamous Sand Creek Massacre, under Colonel John Chivington. During the the Sand Creek Massacre, over two hundred Cheyenne Indians were killed, half of those were women and children. At the end of the massacre the 3rd Colorado Cavalry was called "the Bloody Third". Later he was conferred the rank of Colonel. He was also a 33rd degree Mason and was appointed grand master of the Colorado Masons.
