Carrie Lee Allen, age 88 of Surgoinsville, passed away, Monday, December 12, 2011 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was a graduate of Rogersville High School where she played basketball and Draughon Business College, Knoxville.

During World War II, she was employed at Kingsport Electric Company, later at Burton Brothers Service Station, Rogersville and secretary to George M. Wheeler, Southeastern Aberdeen Angus Association.

Before her husband's health began to fail, she was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Surgoinsville, where she served on many of the committees, the administrative board, council on ministry and was a Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Allen was a volunteer secretary of her church for 25 years and served 33 years as chairman of the hostess committee. She was a former member of the chancel choir, a member of the United Methodist Women, where she was honored for 40 years of service as an officer. Mrs. Allen served her church as a delegate to Holston Conference for many years.

She also, served as district secretary of Rural Church and Community Work for the Kingsport district. For several years she was a substitute teacher at Surgoinsville and Rogersville High School. In her earlier years, she was active in community work, serving as president, secretary and clothing chairman of Surgoinsville Home Demonstration Club. She was also president of the Hawkins County Council of Home Demonstration Clubs. Being an excellent seamstress, she won several purple and blue ribbons on dresses she made and modeled at the Hawkins County Home Demonstration Day and the TVA Fair in Knoxville.

Mrs. Allen was a member of the Hawkins County Clothing Judging Team and went to many different counties to judge clothing. She also taught classes on hat making in different counties. Mrs. Allen loved arts and crafts, making many to sell at the Lord's Acre Sale for her church. She also taught many craft classes. A lover of flowers, she grew beautiful roses for many years.

An avid sports lover, she was a devoted fan of Pat Summit and the Tennessee Lady Vols. She also enjoyed playing golf.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 52 years, Alvin Date Allen; parents, Lon and Nola Burton; brothers, Arnold Burton and Joe Burton; infant brother, Gerald Burton.
She is survived by her two "unadopted' daughters, Doris Williams and husband. Tommy and Debbie Eidson both of Surgoinsville; sisters-in-law, Frances Lea Burton of Rogersville, Garnet Allen of Surgoinsville; nieces, Suzanne Burton Young of Alabama, Libbie Jester and Lisa Chase both of Kingsport; a very special friend, Payne Marshall of Kingsport and Singer Island, Florida.

Calling hours will be noon to 1 P.M., Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville. Funeral service will be conducted 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, December 14, 2011 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Paul Seay and Rev. Ronald Hammond officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contribution may be made to the Building Fund of First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 134, Surgoinsville, TN 37873 or to the charity of your choice.
