She was the daughter of Bernard Piutti and Minna Lammerhirt Piutti. On June 19, 1902, she married Manson F. Backus at Greens Farms, Connecticut. She was his third wife and related by marriage to his second wife, Lue Adams Backus. Lue's sister, Anna Adams Piutti, was married to Max Piutti, the brother of Elise Piutti Backus.

Elise Piutti Backus was born near Erfurt in Saxony, Germany in 1860. In 1881 she came to the United States with her brother, Max Piutti, head of the Department of Music at Wells College. At Wells she studied linguistics and was later became the chair of German. She was a teacher there for 15 years and met her future husband, Manson Backus there. During her sabbatical year she returned to Germany to study at the University of Berlin. Upon her return, they became engaged and in 1902 they were married at Green’s Farms in Connecticut. She was a charter member of the Sunset Club and a member of their Board of Directors. She was a member of the Ladies Musical Club and a member of the Ladies’ Relief Society, serving on the Board of Directors and as President for two years. She was a founder of the Rosemary Club for Girls and served as President of the Board. She collected the works of Roy Partridge, a Seattle artist and etcher who became the head of the Art Department at Mills College. She gifted his works to her alma mater, Wells College at Aurora, Illinois in memory of her brothers, Max and William Piutti. She died at age 67 on Wednesday, October 19, 1927 at the family home in The Highlands after an illness of three months. Survivors included her husband, Manson F. Backus; a niece, Mrs. Frederick H. Parks of Seattle and three nieces and one nephew in Honolulu, Hawaii. Funeral services were held at The Highland Chapel with Rev. Dr. Edward S. Smith and Dr. H.H. Gowen officiating. Organ music was played at the service, but there was no singing. Active pallbearers were D.W. Burchard, Joshua Green, C.T. Conover, A.F. McEwan, R.S. Walker and M.A. Arnold. Honorary pallbearers were A.W. Engle, Thomas Green, Thomas Stimson, J.D. Lowman, Alexander Baillie, Montgomery Russell, L.C. Henry and A.B. Stewart. Arrangements were by Bonney-Watson Co. Fuenral Directors. Cremation was private. The family requested no flowers.
