Ashford, Jason Feller.

SALEM - Jason Feller Ashford, 89, resident of Salem, Oregon, passed away on May 28, 2013 while quietly working on his farm.

Jason was born at home on the family farm in Brown County, South Dakota on November 1, 1923, to Ward and Violet Ashford. His family moved to God's country during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression in 1936. He settled in Oregon, graduating from Salem High School. He honorably served in the U.S. Army 2045th Signal Battalion during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Japan. After completing his service in the Pacific, he was very proud to have attended Oregon State University, where he lived in Weatherford Hall with many other veterans and graduated in 1950 with a degree in business. While at Oregon State he met his wife of 30 years, Anna Louise Anderson.

After a career as an auditor for the State of Oregon, Jason was fortunate enough to spend as many years retired as he did working. During his retirement he pursued his fondness of ornamental plants and started Westside Ornamentals in 1983 with his longtime friend, Sharon Leopold, and her daughter Kathy. He enjoyed propagating native rhododendrons and was an active supporter of the Cecil and Molly Smith Garden in St. Paul. Jason spent his later years with the help of his good friend, Bob Grasing, tending to his enormous vegetable garden, dozens of laying chickens, and rhododendron nursery for all to enjoy. Everyone who spent time with Jason was touched by his welcoming and generous charm. He was an active member of the Willamette Rhododendron Society, National Rifle Association, Masonic Lodge of Salem, Boy Scouts of America and Ducks Unlimited.

His true love in life was his family; five children with their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were unconditionally loved and supported by a kind and generous man. He found immense joy anytime his family got together. Each year he anxiously awaited the Family Picnic, Annual Hunt, and all holiday get-togethers. The Farm was always a welcoming place where family shared many meals throughout the week or an evening of pinochle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Vivian Dye and Grace Groh. He is survived by his brother Bud (Enid) and sister Genny (John) Topping; his five children Harold (Peggy), Bonnie (Ross), Glenn (Betty Jo), Bruce (Jeannine) and Scott (Meleah); fifteen grandchildren Teresa (Lori), T.J., Katie, Marc, Kelly (Derik), Amanda (Dustin), Andrew, Matt, Nick, Chris (Ashley), Dustin, Micah, Jake, Angela and Monica, and eight great-grandchildren Lucy, Isaac, Jonah, Lincoln, Rahya, Lilliana, Leste, and Cruz.

A memorial service will held at 11:30 am, Tuesday, June 4 at the First Presbyterian Church, 770 Chemeketa St. NE, Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Ducks Unlimited, the OSU Foundation or the Smith Garden. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
