John Tatum Bradley, a son of John Edward Bradley and the former Miss Sarah Margaret (Sallie) Wideman, was born in the bounds of Long Cane in Abbeville County, South Carolina. His father was a member of the State Legislature and Member of Board of Trustees of Clemson College; where John Tatum was a graduate in the 1st Class of Clemson.

John Tatum was married to Miss Katrina Alma "Kitty" Wardlaw, a daughter of David and Bettie Wardlaw. They had twin sons:
David Wardlaw (1904-1992)
John Edward (1904-1905)

After Kitty died in 1907, John Tatum later married Miss Alberta "Bertie" Ladd; with whom he had two children:
John Tatum, Jr. (1917-1980)
Frances Kent {m. Jeter}(1926-1988)
