Charles August Kuehne, also known as Carl, but usually called August, was born in Germany about 1800 and married there about 1832 Dora Braase. This couple immigrated to America in 1846 with their four children, and possibly a fifth that died enroute. They landed on the Texas coast at Indianola, but shortly after their arrival Dora died. The remainder of the family joined a group of settlers heading inland, and eventually joined the Castroville colony on the Medina River. The family had only been there for a short time when August was robbed and beaten, soon dying from his injuries. On 29 October 1848 G. L. Haass was appointed as the guardian of the young children of August and Dora.
August was buried in Castroville in the original community cemetery. Whether this is the same as the community cemetery of today has not been determined.
