Grandson of Carter Braxton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Son of Carter Moore Braxton, Sr. and Elizabeth Teagle Mayo Braxton.
Moved to Fredericksburg, Va. in 1847.
1st marriage to Fannie Page Hume, whose wartime diary is still published: "The Diary of Fannie Page Hume, Orange VA, 1861; The Diary of Fannie Page Hume, Orange VA, 1862". She died 3 months after their wedding.
2nd marriage to Nannie Clementia Alsop.
Postwar he was a Civil Engineer for the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Petersburg Railroad, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, and other lines.

Promoted to 1st Lieut 5/1861; assigned as Assistant Chief Engineer of VA Troops.
Promoted to Capt 5/8/1861; transferred back into VA Fredericksburg Light Artillery.
Re-elected Capt 4/1/1862.
Promoted to Major 3/2/1863.
Promoted to Lt Col 2/27/1864.

The artillery company which became the Fredericksburg Artillery organized in its namesake city on January 19, 1861.
