Susan was found in the 1880 United States Federal Census as being 26 years old and living in the area of Jacksonville, Marion County, Georgia. At that time with husband James P. and children, Lena 7. Harriet 4, and Albert Gill aged 11 months. James was farming at the time.
By 1900 the family had moved to Draneville and added a few more children. Their children, Lena and Harriet, found in the earlier 1880 census were not listed in 1900 as being with the family, however with Susan, husband James and son Albert, now 20 years old, they had added Lelia Isabelle 17, Will Davis 15, Anna Corine "Cora" 12, Joseph Arthur 7, and Mary F.D. 4. James was now farming their own land.
Next, in the 1910 census, still in Draneville and living on Buena Vista - Richland Road, the couple only had their daughter Leila 24, now living with them. In this census it was reported that Susan and James had had eight children in all, seven of which were living at the time.
