She was born in Gladstone, Neb. in 1924. Berynce and her husband Harry moved in 1947 to Alta, where they raised three children. They were owners of Melander's appliance store for over forty years. For a short time, Bernyce worked as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Jefferson County, Neb. Although she spent most of her adult years as a homemaker, she believed in lifelong learning. Education was important to Bernyce. She was often heard saying that, "Education is the one thing that cannot be taken away from you." As a self-taught artist, Bernyce enjoyed watching Bob Ross oil paint on television. She was a dedicated member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, and was known for her chalk art of biblical scenes. Bernyce was an avid golfer, bowler, cross word puzzle player, and Scrabble aficionado. She enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs play baseball and the Hawkeyes play football. Her family fondly remembers her for being a homemaker, a teacher, a caregiver, and an artist.

Bernyce Louise Melander was preceded in death by her parents, Minnie and Bernard Eilts; brothers, Leo Eilts and Raymond (Margaret) Eilts; sisters, June (Harry) Henkel and Alice (Bud) Henkel; infant daughter, Carolyn; son, Harry Melander Jr. "Butch"; and husband Harry Edwin Melander.
