Floyd Eugene Hilderbrandt, age 87, passed away at the Lindsay Manor Nursing Home on Saturday, September 4th, 2010.

Floyd was born in Arkansas City, Kansas on January 29, 1923, to Ernest John Hilderbrandt and Iola Mae (Kinkaid) Hilderbrandt.

Floyd was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy for five years and eight months in both the Pacific and European Theaters of the war.

On September 8, 1940 he reported as a member of the crew of the USS Boise. While on board the USS Boise, he fought in the close range night action against the Japanese navy off Cape Esperance in the Solomon Islands on the night of October 11-12, 1942. Floyd and the crew of the USS Boise were in the Mediterranean Sea July 10-14, 1943, bombarding Gela, Sicily in support of the landing of American troops there. On August l4th, they bombarded Cape Calava & Cape Milazzo in northern Sicily in support of the US 7th Army as it advanced on Messina. They bombarded Palmi, Italy on the 17th. Floyd and the crew of the USS Boise covered the landing of British Commandos at Taranto, Italy on September 9th, 1943, and furnished fire support to the landings of the US 5th Army at Salerno, Italy, from September 12th to the l6". In 1944, Floyd was transferred to the USS Ingraham, and then on to the USS Coghlan.

Floyd received several honors while serving his country outside the continental limits of the United States and was authorized, on September 26, 1945, to wear
-the Asiatic-Pacific Area Service Ribbon with two stars
-the American Area Service Ribbon and
-the Philippine Liberatie Ribbon with one star for the Oromoc Bay Landing and Lingayen Gulf Landing.

Floyd and his brother ran oilfield service businesses for over 50 years. He enjoyed his farm out east of Lindsay and had a real love for his cattle. When he wasn't farming, he enjoyed traveling.

Floyd was a member of the First Baptist Church. His church family was very dear to him. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and was a Shriner.

Floyd is survived by his wife of 24 years, Kay Hilderbrandt, two children, a stepdaughter, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren one sister and one brother.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents and his other siblings.

Funeral services for Mr. Hilderbrandt will be held ten o'clock a.m. on Tuesday, September 7th, 2010, at the First Baptist Church, Lindsay, OK, with Pastor Randy Allen officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Lindsay. Services are under the direction of B.G. Boydston Funeral Home of Lindsay, Oklahoma. Condolences for the family may be made online at
