They had at least five children (Robert, Loannie, Lela, Anna, and Joy). In 1910, he joined his sister, Mary, and her husband in Hanson, South Dakota, and is listed as a widower on the 1910 census records. He spent many years in Colorado after they left Wisconsin. John, brother David, and sister, Mary are all buried in Green Hill Cemetery.
