Russian Imperial Army Field Marshal. He was a formidable military hero with a reputation for ruthlessness and success. He made his early reputation in wars against the Turks. Called out of retirement to campaign against Napoleon, he initially smashed the French in a series of victories in Italy (Cassano, Trebbia and Novi) but after the battle of Massena was forced to retreat. Returned to St. Petersburg in disgrace and died shortly afterwards. According to legend, at his funeral his coffin was slightly too large to enter the church doors, but one of the soldiers bearing it declared 'Suvorov always got through!' - and, with a little shoving, he did.
