Funeral services announced for Milpitas mother, child killed in horrific crash

FREMONT -- Funeral services for a mother and her 3-year-old son killed in a tragic car crash that landed the child's father in jail last week were announced Tuesday.

A viewing for Milpitas resident Joie Gil, 31, and her son, Angelo, is scheduled for Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Lima Family Mortuary, located at 48800 Warm Springs Boulevard in Fremont, according to the funeral home's website. A funeral for both Gil and her son will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the same location, the website stated.

The toddler died on June 4 when his father, Gilbert Gil, slammed into a tree on Paseo Padre Parkway in Fremont after he lost control of his car, splitting the vehicle in two.

The father and son were both ejected from the vehicle, and Angelo, who was strapped in his car seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Joie Gil, who was pulled from the wreck, succumbed to her injuries June 5.

Police believe Gilbert Gil, 34, was speeding at the time of the crash. He was arraigned Monday on two charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of child endangerment.

Joie Gil is survived by her parents, husband, two children and three stepchildren, according to the funeral home's website.

In lieu of flowers, Joie Gil's family has asked that donations be made to a trust fund for her children's college expenses. Contributions can be made online at

Fremont: Mother dies one day after crash that killed 3-year-old son
FREMONT -- A day after a toddler's life was cut short in a horrific crash along a quiet Fremont street, the boy's mother died from injuries she suffered in the same crash.
Fremont police announced shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday that Joie Gil, 31, had died of the injuries she sustained in the crash that killed her son, Angelo Gil, 3, when his car seat was thrown into a chain-link fence Tuesday afternoon.
Police said Angelo's father, 34-year-old Gilbert Gil, lost control of a 2009 Honda Accord and struck a tree on Tuesday afternoon along Paseo Padre Parkway. The impact split the car in half and flung Angelo's car seat from the back of the maroon sedan into a chain-link fence with the boy still strapped inside.

The boy, officials said, was killed instantly.
Angelo's father was also ejected from the car but not critically injured. Hospital spokeswoman Bev Mikalonis said Wednesday afternoon that Gilbert Gil was in good condition.
His wife and the boy's mother, Joie Gil, was found unconscious, strapped into the front passenger seat, police said. She underwent surgery Tuesday night at San Jose Regional Medical Center, said police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
Bosques said police have yet to determine if they will file charges against Gilbert Gil. She declined to release any new information about the speed of the car or the circumstances that led to the crash onTuesday.
The street has a speed limit of 35 mph; skid marks of about 150 feet led to the vehicle's resting place in front of the curb.
Although there's no indication alcohol was a factor in the crash, Bosques said, the child's father will undergo standard toxicology screening. The test results will take about three weeks, Bosques said.
Bosques also said police are looking into whether the couple was arguing before the crash.
Neighbors of the family who live on Acadia Avenue described Angelo as a curly-haired little boy who often played in front of the home with his skateboard and his parents. He was just weeks away from his fourth birthday.
"When I heard about the little guy, it just dropped my heart," neighbor Juanita Engle said Wednesday. "It's just something that no mother or parent wants to see. It's a shame. It's a tragedy. Whenever children are involved, it breaks my heart."
She said Gil was an attentive father and expressed shock when learning speed was a factor in the crash.
Engle said she often saw Gilbert Gil repairing cars in the family's driveway.
Police believe the three were headed to a nearby water park in their Honda and were speeding north in the 41400 block of Paseo Padre Parkway around 12:50 p.m. when the car veered off the road, Bosques said.
The car struck a tree -- violently enough to strip bark from the tree's trunk and shear off most of the rear of the vehicle -- before coming to rest on a curb in front of a home, Bosques said. The rear half of the car flew about 20 yards away from the rest of the vehicle.
"It was horrific," said Grant Gallegos, who lives about a block from the scene of the crash. He said he ran toward the crash when he heard it and found Gilbert Gil lying in the street. The father asked about his son and if he was still in the car seat.
Joie Gil was trapped in the car; it took fire crews about 10 minutes to free her.
The driver suffered serious injuries but was conscious when police arrived and told officers, as he sat on a curb, that "I lost control," police said.
