Darrell L. “D.C.” Chronister, 82, of Jefferson City died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at St. Mary’s Health Center, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 14 at Freeman Mortuary in Jefferson City. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Freeman Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Doyle Sager officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson City. Darrell was born Dec. 12, 1925, in Sikeston, the son of Lyman J. and Camile Boone Chronister, both deceased. He was married on Nov. 2, 1984, in Jefferson City to Joan Gerling, who survives at the home. A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Darrell was a 1943 graduate of Ellington High School in Ellington and the University of Missouri in 1951. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Darrell enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. He was a certified public accountant and was a partner with Williams-Keepers for many years prior to his retirement in 2001. Darrell was a member of the First Baptist Church; a life-long member and past commander of the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5; a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roy Sone Post 1003; a member of the Cosmopolitan Club; and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2693. Other survivors include four sons, Tinker Chronister and his wife, Lois, of Jefferson City, Roger Gerling and his wife, Jodi, of Taos, Donnie Gerling and his wife, Holly, of Jefferson City, and Louis Gerling of Holts Summit; two daughters, Lora Zaner and her husband, Aaron, of Columbia and Melissa Rusk of Holts Summit; two sisters, Quinnie Lane and her husband, David, of Ellington and Anunda Sutton of Houston, Texas; one brother, Bill Chronister and his wife, Marge, of Poplar Bluff; 11 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Gaila Lager, and one brother, Lonnie Chronister. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to The Forty and Eight Nurses Training Program at the American Legion or the First Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
