North Carolina Governor. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the 68th Governor of North Carolina from 1973 to 1977. His father was a district attorney, his mother was a nurse, he followed his father's career choice and attained his law degree from the University of North Carolina Law School. He initiated his political career when he was first elected to his state's House of Representatives in 1963. Holshouser benefited from President Nixon's landslide victory in 1972 and won the governorship. During his tenure, he prioritized efforts for improving education, public transportation and better relations with minority groups.
