Raymond Edward Lyons, age 90 of Coal City, passed away Saturday morning June 15, 2013 at Morris Hospital.

Raymond was born November 25, 1922 to Henry Edward Lyons and Minnie Favero-Lyons in their home on Kankakee Street in Coal City. After graduating high school with the class of 1940, Raymond established Lyons Draperies and Window Treatments, which he operated for 41 years until retiring in June 1986. Raymond enjoyed his long years in business with employees Amy, Alice and Margaret.

Raymond married Clara Ashamy in Assumption Catholic Church on April 16, 1959, and shared 26 years of married life together in their home on Second Street in Coal City. Clara died of a heart attack on August 11, 1985.

He was a long time member and past president of the Coal City Lions Club; co-chaired the Coal City Bi-Centennial Celebration in 1976, and was chosen to be general chairman of the committee planning the Coal City Centennial Celebration in August of 1981. Raymond helped plan for the Grundy County Community Hospice Auxiliary in 1986; served on the board of directors and was president of the Auxiliary for 11 years. He was a member of the board of directors and past president of the Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties, and received the Outstanding Community Service Award from the Coal City Village Board in October of 1987. Raymond was also a recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award in 1988, which was given by the Grundy County Association of Commerce and Industry and had the honor of being selected Grand Marshall of the Grundy County Corn Festival parade in Morris in October of 1989. For several years Raymond served on a committee to help plan the Summer Serenade dinner dance, which benefited the Center for Independent Living. He active with Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, where he was a long time member of the parish council, and served as a lector and Eucharistic minister.

Ray is survived by a devoted and loving brother Henry and sister-in-law Nancy (nee Ross) Lyons; a niece Susan Lyons, two nephews: Greg (Kathy) Lyons and Alan (Becky) Lyons and two great nephews: Benjamin and Luke Lyons. Other survivors include his sister-in-law Eleanor Ashamy and niece Sharon (Raymond) Skaggs, both of Joliet; niece Cory (Marc) Fuchs of Springfield, Illinois; three great nieces: Kim Fuchs, Becky Foster and Maureen Skaggs and one great nephew Patrick Skaggs, as well as his loving and devoted friend Louise Martin.

Visitation: Tuesday June 18, 2013, 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway, Coal City.

Funeral services: Wednesday, June 19, 2013, 10:00 a.m. in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 South Kankakee Street in Coal City, where a mass will be celebrated with Reverend Robert Noesen officiating.

Burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Greg Lyons, Alan Lyons, Benjamin Lyons, Luke Lyons, Mark Bruno and Mark Wills. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bruce Martin, Raymond Skaggs, Mark Fuchs and Louis Bruno.
