He married (3rd) Billye Doris Stevens Trammell in January 1973 in Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas. Per her obit, they were married 1 January 1974 and January 1973 per Russel's obit.

Russell served in the US Army during WW II in France and Germany. He was assigned to a hospital unit in Germany. He was discharged at Ft. Benning, Georgia as a Second Lieutenant.

Russel raised quarter horses and Red Angus cattle. He was an auctioneer, and was the County Farm Agent for Labette and Jefferson Counties for twenty years.
