Essie Lee Lewis was born December 6, 1919 in Walterboro, SC, the daughter of the late Essie E Herndon and the late Anna R Dewitt Herndon.
Early in her life she worked as a waitress at the Walterboro Hotel. Essie moved to Charleston in the 1930's and worked at a local hotel. Later she worked at her daughter's dance school, Darlene's School of Dance of Goose Creek.
Essie was a member of Holmes Avenue Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Jewell Lewis of North Charleston, SC; daughters: Lillie Benton and husband Derryl of Hanahan SC, June L. Jones and husband David of Goose Creek, SC and Darlene L. Schrader and husband Stan of Goose Creek, SC; eight grandsons, three granddaughters, eight great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons; nieces and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband Junior E. Lewis, daughter Laraine Roe, great-granddaughter Paris Linville and sister Virgie Sewell.
A Funeral Service will be held, June 18, 2013, in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, at 2:00 pm. Her eight grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends June17, 2013 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Stuhr's Downtown Chapel.
