Obituary for Vivan E. Cates, The Stillwater News Press, April 29, 2001:

Vivan E. Cates died Friday, April 27, 2001, in Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson, Kan. Services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the United Methodist Church of Claflin, Kan. Interment with military graveside rites will follow at Claflin Cemetery. The Rev. Mathew Price will officiate. Services are under the direction of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home of Hoisington, Kan.
He was born July 10, 1922, in Ellsinore, Mo., to Jesse Elmond and Lizzie Carter Cates. He married Thelma J. Gower on Dec. 18, 1948, in Winfield, Kan.
He moved from Cushing to Claflin, Kan. in 1954 where he was the operator of Cates Motor Service. He later owned Cates Custom Combines and retired as owner of Cates Service & Supply. All were in Claflin, Kan. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the First Southern Baptist Church.
He is predeceased by his mother.
He is survived by his wife of the home; his father, Jesse E. Cates, Cushing; six sons, Donald Cates, Claflin, Kan., Bruce Cates, Houston, Texas, Raymond Cates, Fort Worth, Texas, Robert Cates, Claflin, Kan., Steven Cates, Emporia, Kan., Barry Cates, Milwaukee, Wis.; one daughter, Myra Prosser, Claflin, Kan.; eight sisters, Irene Pack, Cushing; Lorene Franklin, Mannford; Kathleen Harrison, Cushing; Ernestine Pershing, Stillwater; Sylvia Myerdirk, Bartlesville; Opal Gayhart, Cushing; Juanita Kirkpatrick, Cushing; Rosilee Mills, Pittsboro, N.C.; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials can be sent to the Reno County Hospice or Vivan and Thelma Cates Scholarship Fund in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 415 N. Main, Hoisington, Kan., 67544.
