MRS. IRENE GATES
Mrs. O. J. (Irene) Gates, 76, died Tuesday May 7, at Fairhaven where she had recently made her home. Born November 8, 1891 in Marinette, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of William and Grace Wright Brown. She married Harry C. Leffingwell on July 6, 1916. He died January 30, 1950. On April 15, 1962 she married Dr. O. J. Gates of Fort Atkinson, who died August 13, 1967. Mrs. Gates spent her youth in Marinette and her married life in Whitewater and Fort Atkinson, and recently at Fairhaven in Whitewater. She was the choir director at the Congregational Church here for twenty years, and was also director of the Fairhaven Chorus. A long-time member of Emerson Club, she was on its honorary member list at the time of her death. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Lucille Netzow, Lake Mills; two sons, Chapman Leffingwell, Whitewater; and William Leffingwell, Long Island, New York; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Mrs Florence Tenberthy, Arcadia, Calif Services will be held today (Thursday) at 3:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church, Rev. Carroll Olm officiating. Burial will be in Hilside Cemetery. The family has designated Fairhaven as the recipient of memorials.
