MUNNSVILLE >> Hugh M. Griffin II, 85, of 6131 Williams Road, Munnsville, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at his home.
He was born on July 15, 1927, in Munnsville, the son of Hugh and Maude Arnold Griffin.
Hugh lived in Munnsville all of his life, graduating from Stockbridge Valley Central School in 1946. He later attended Morrisville Ag & Tech.
He retired from the Madison County Highway Department after 17 years, where he was an equipment operator and cook in the County Highway Department kitchen. He had previously worked for National Casket Company in Oneida for several years.
Hugh was a US Navy Veteran.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 54 in Munnsville, and the First Congregational Church in Munnsville.
Hugh was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed playing cards and shuffleboard, doing word puzzles, and vegetable gardening. Hugh loved his pets and other neighborhood animals.
He married Dorothy J. MacDougall on April 7, 1951, in Sherrill.
Surviving besides his wife, Dorothy, are: one son and daughter-in-law, Hugh M. III and Patricia Griffin of Chester, Conn.; three daughters and a son-in-law, Beth Bobay and Nora Griffin, both of Oneida, and Nancy and Steve Jacobs of Knoxboro; 10 grandchildren, David Wagner, Michael and Arene Wagner, Kenneth and Jill Wagner, Carrie and RJ Funcannon, Melissa and Christiaan Cokas, Jason and Kim Griffin, Shelly Moore, Hugh Griffin III, Caitlin Griffin, and Melanie Bobay; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Hugh was predeceased by a son-in-law, Richard Bobay; and his sister and brother-in-law, Gene and "Bud" Marshall.
Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the First Congregational Church, 6137 Williams Road, Munnsville. Pastor Tom Davies will officiate. Burial will be in Stockbridge Cemetery, Munnsville. At Hugh's request there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the supervision of the Ball Funeral Home, 5327 N. Main St., Munnsville. In his memory, contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 88, Munnsville, N.Y. 13409, or to Wanderers' Rest Humane Association, P.O. Box 535, Canastota, N.Y. 13032, with envelopes available at the church.
