In 1860, he was a laborer living in Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 6" tall with brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in West Chester, Chester County, June 8, 1861, mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 as a private with Co. D, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry). He was admitted to Columbian U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, November 21, 1863, for illness, returning to duty ca. March 1864. At either the battle of the Wilderness or Spotsylvania allegedly on May 10, 1864, he was wounded in the left side, the ball entering the front of his body and exiting his back near the spine. He was admitted to 1st Division U.S. Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia; the May 10 date of wounding is questionable because that is also the date he entered the hospital, It is more likely that he was wounded on May 5 or 6, 1864, at the Wilderness. He honorably discharged at term's end June 13, 1864.

In 1890, he lived in Indiantown, Conestoga Township.
