A well known bootlegger in the 1940s and 1950s, known as "the flying bootlegger" for his use of air transport. The death date is not certain.

He disappeared July 4th, 1956, and probably that is the date he was murdered. The magazine "Oklahoma Today" reports that the body was discovered in a shallow grave on Eldon Rowland's farm west of Moore (Cleveland County) on 7 Nov 1957. It was speculated that Chambless's corpse had been moved at least once after his death.

He is known to have had three children by his last wife Mary Lou Smith. She was the daughter of Stella Embry Smith Orrell, who was married to Courtney Orrell at the time of his arrest for the 1941 murder of Billie Grayson in Lincoln County, Oklahoma.

The three children are: James Clinton “Jimmy” Chambless, 1948-1999, served in Vietnam, died in Tucson Arizona, and was buried in Cisco Texas. No spouse or children are known. Ronald Eugene “Ronnie” Chambless. And Lynda Louise Chambless, who married Melvin Paul Wende from Eastland County Texas.

At last report in September 2013, there was still no marker on this grave, but the head of the Oklahoma Outlaws and Lawmen Historical Association (OKOLHA) told me that his organization had plans to erect one when funds became available. He is since deceased, and nothing more is known of this plan.
