Enlisted as a 19 yr. old resident of Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Ia. prior to April 26, 1861 in Capt. E.S. Sampson's Co. as a private. Co. later became Co. F, 5th Iowa Infantry. His name appears on a roll dated April 26, 1861 of Capt. Sampson's Co., along with a J.V. Baldwin, both of Sigourney, Ia. Left sick in hospital at Humansville, Mo. Nov. 1, 1861. By Nov. 5, 1861 he had been moved to the hospital at Quincy, Mo. Reported in a letter dated Jan. 15, 1862 by L.M. Morrison, also of Co. F, as, "being left at a private house on the road between Warsaw and Quincy on our march from Springfield, Mo. At last account he was getting better". Died of measles and typhoid fever on Dec. 3, 1861 at Warsaw, Mo. He would have been buried where he died and his remains reinterred after the war to the National Cemetery at Springfield, Mo. where he was buried as an unknown U.S. soldier.
