John served in the War of 1812. As noted on his headstone, John was the first person to be buried in the Montrose Cemetery.

John was born in MA on northern border. At the time of his military pension application, that part of MA was most likely changed to be part of New Hampshire. His birth location (MA) was noted on his daughter's death certificate.

Per Gertrude Miller manuscript, the photo of John P. Slade featured here is from a daguerreotype. It is the only known photo of him and it survived a fire that burned John P. Slade's home down.
