KATHERINE JOYCE DAWSON BARKER

1942 - 2013

Katherine Joyce Dawson entered this world with the assistance of Dr. Noel Z. Tanner at her Grandma Laura Barnes' home in Layton, Utah on January 30, 1942. She was the third of five children born to Harold J. and Doris Marston Dawson of Layton. Joyce passed beyond the veil into the arms of her Savior and Father in Heaven on June 14, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

Joyce married Gary Lee Barker in the Salt Lake Temple on August 21, 1964. They have three children: Michele Barker, Pleasant Grove, Utah; Pamela Barker, Layton, Utah; and Brian Gary (Audrie) Barker, Yerington, Nevada; and three grandchildren: Travis, Xander, and Keira. She was dedicated to her family and loved them dearly.

Joyce's education was full and life-long. She was educated in Davis County Schools through high school at Layton Elementary, Central Davis Jr. High, and Davis High School. She graduated from Weber College [State University] with an Associate's Degree in Education and from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education (Home Economics) with a Secondary Teaching Certificate. She taught Home Economics at Kaysville Jr. High School and Clearfield High School. Later she earned her Special Education Endorsement and taught Special Education students at Kaysville Jr. High School. Joyce volunteered countless hours at her children's schools throughout the years.

Joyce was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served lovingly and faithfully for over 50 years in many church callings including Relief Society President; a member of the Layton East Stake Relief Society Board; over 30 years in various callings in the Cub Scouts; Primary teacher, Primary Presidency Counselor, and Primary President; Sunday School teacher; Ward Preparedness Specialist; and Visiting Teacher.

Her hobbies included reading, crocheting, quilting, canning, cake decorating, making gingerbread houses/cookie trains, and playing the piano. She was an excellent seamstress, designing and sewing her wedding dress, her sister's wedding dress, and countless dresses for her daughters as well as other projects for the house, family, and friends.

She will be remembered for her strength, patience, gentle spirit, quick smile, service to others, her pineapple-upside-down cake, and "Joyce's raspberry Jell-O."

Joyce is survived by her family; her sisters Karlene Greenwood and Patricia (Del) Morris, her brothers Mark (Bernita) Dawson and Lowell (Joyce) Dawson; her sister-in-law Diane (Thomas) McCurdy, and brothers-in-law Dennis Barker and Jody (Carla) Barker. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold J. and Doris Marston Dawson; sister-in-law Kaye Barker, and brother-in law Rick Barker.

Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
