Writer. Prolific author of at least 19 novels and numerous short stories, she tended to write about the human character in mundane situations, usually in a New England setting; dogs also had a prominent role in many of her stories. She often travelled around the country, and had lived in various places far from her birth (Florida, New York) but toward the end of her life she returned to her hometown to care for her elderly mother and frail sister. She died of pneumonia in the spring of 1898; she is buried beside her lifelong companion Caroline M. Branson, who survived her by 20 years.
