Her grandmother Mary Magdalena Schwaninger immigrated to America from their homeland of Switzerland via France, arriving in New Orleans in 1854. They settled in Charlestown, Indiana. Minerva's father, James Smith was a farmer, one of his crops was tobacco. They were hard workers. Minnie was at one time a nurse and then a teacher. She met Arthur Marion Smith while visiting Des Moines, Iowa. He was a grandson to the Prophet Joseph Smith. They soon married and she set to the task of raising six step children and added five more with Arthur. She was a monumental help to Arthur in his ministry for the Church of Christ Temple Lot. Never one to be idle, Minnie engaged in many hobbies and crafts, excelling in quilting, sewing, knitting and crocheting just to name a few. She was well loved of those who knew her. She died in 1998, falling peacefully to sleep with embroidery hoop still in hand.
