Raymond L. Garrett, of Bowie, a retired Southwestern Bell Telephone Company Switchman, passed away Friday, June 14, 2013, in Bowie, Texas. He was 89 years old.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Bowie, Texas with Mike Henson officiating.

Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Bowie, Texas.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 til' 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2013, at the White Family Funeral Home.

Arrangements are entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home of Bowie.

Raymond was born December 16, 1923 to William and Lora (Mead) Garrett in Bowie, Texas. He was a lifetime resident of Bowie, and retired after 37 ½ years from South Western Bell Company of Bowie in 1981. Raymond volunteered for the United States Army Service in 1942 and served with the 34th Signal Company of the 34th Infantry Division in North Africa and Italy. Included in his Service Awards were the Purple Heart, for wounds received on the Anzio beach head, and the Purple Heart, with Oak Leaf Cluster for shell fragment wounds in northern Italy.

Raymond was always active in civic and church work serving on numerous activities and projects. He was Past President of the Bowie Lions Club and Chaplain of the American Legion Post 252. Raymond was also a licensed Private Pilot and a charter member of the Bowie Civil Air Patrol.

Raymond was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was served as a Deacon since 1948. He was recognized in Bowie and Montague County for his work in researching and writing the History of Bowie, Texas published in 1982, and his contribution to the History of Montague County published in 1989.

Raymond was a member of the Bowie Masonic Lodge no. 578 and a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He also served the City of Bowie as a councilman for so many years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Lora Garrett; wife, Christine Garrett; two brothers, Paul and Charles Garrett; sister, Dorothy Stracner.

Raymond is survived by his two daughters, Beverly Ann Deweber and husband, Stephen of Bowie and Janis Gail Perrenot and husband, Bob of Dallas; four grandchildren, Clint and Michael Deweber of Bowie, Christine and Mary Perrenot of Dallas.
