Jazz Musician. He first gained national attention in 1944, for his work with Woody Herman's big band. He later performed and recorded with Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Lee Konitz, Miles Davis and the NBC staff orchestra. He was best known for his association with the pianist and composer Lennie Tristano. He was the guitarist who took the jazz idiom beyond the swing era, beyond bebop, to the avant-garde of today's jazz. In 1958, he formed the William H. Bauer Music Publishing Company, which published and recorded a complex brand of modern jazz compositions as well as his own music. After years in recording and broadcast studios, he opened the Billy Bauer Guitar School in 1970. For over three decades his hundreds of students ranged from young children to professionals like Denny Dias, an original member of the rock band Steely Dan. He also wrote his autobiography, called “Sideman” published in 1997.
